Bowling

Sexton Mountain Eagles have been hitting the bowling lanes.  As you can see, we mean business.
The proper grip and "stare down" ready stance done to perfection by this awesome 1st grader!

Students practiced technique:
  • "Horns" grip with the correct fingers in the holes.
  • "Stare Down" ready stance
  • Full "swing" back and forth
  • A smooooooth like-an-airplane-landing "Spiderman" release toward the pins
  • 4-step Approach starting with the foot on the same side you hold the ball
Students in grades 3-5 used self-evaluated their bowling technique using footage of them bowling (filmed by a partner).  Students used iPads and the app Coach's Eye.

Students applied terms like Strike, Spare, Frame, Foul Line, Turkey, and Gutter.

Students learned how to calculate scores and kept score using an iPad with a free app called BowlingScore.

Thanks to Sunset Lanes in Beaverton for loaning us bowling equipment which enabled us to increase bowling opportunities in PE.  Most lanes had only 2-3 students!

Now they are ready to head to Sunset Lanes, Big Al's, or any other great bowling establishment!

MANY STUDENTS SAID THEY ARE READY TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE BUMPERS!

This week...Pirate Island & iPads

Enjoy some pictures of our students playing Pirate Island.  It is an adventure game involving Treasure Hunters vs Pirates in a quest to get some treasure!  To succeed, students needed to use teamwork, be good sports, and exhibit safe behavior.

Also, 3rd through 5th grade students used iPads to take a 2-minute quiz (see pic at bottom of post) about concepts and benefits relating to Heart/Heart Rate/Pulse.  Quick and easy way to assess kids in PE without sacrificing movement time...as well as trees:)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
Over vacation, so many students tracked their commitment to daily physical activity on their Winter Break 60 scorecards.  I saw lots of proud faces as they turned them in to me this week!

I do know there were students who did not return scorecards, but were still physically active on their break from school.

Sexton students are developing great habits when it comes to being active everyday!  By the way, here is a great article for families on the topic of daily physical activity which was featured in a fabulous Health & Fitness section in Wednesday's Oregonianhttp://www.oregonlive.com/health/index.ssf/2014/01/fitness_2014_oregon_state_univ.html#incart_river

This week, we have been using iPads to improve our physical skills through video skill self-evaluations using an app called Coach's Eye.  Students video record each other performing a skill we have been working on, then immediately evaluate themselves.  Also, students have been using an app called FitDeck Jr. students to work out!  Enjoy the photos!

P.E. Shorts (news)

The Hoop Shoot Contest begins on Thursday.  The next visit to P.E. for each 2nd-5th grade class, students who registered for the Hoop Shoot Contest will compete.  New participations can still register until December 6 or until their P.E. class during the week of December 10.

The Winter Break 60 will happen again this year.  It's designed to encourage students and families to stay physically active during Winter Break.  Look for more info soon!

My project on Donorschoose.org was funded last week!  Our P.E. program will receive 2 iPad minis to use in P.E. classes for the purposes of skill development, video peer assessment, video self-assessment, small group fitness activities, and more!

Report Cards will be going home soon!  Look for those P.E. grades.  More info on P.E. grades to come soon!

Go Timbers!

iPads in P.E.

iPads in P.E. classes?  I have always had reservations about bringing screens into a place where we want kids to move as much as possible.  But having an open-mind is important, right?

After talking with other P.E. teachers and doing some research, I believe this unlikely pairing could work.  Access to digital devices is easier than ever.  So let's put them to use to help us move more!

I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed. So I've created a classroom project request at DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity.

I'm asking for donations of any size to help my kids. Until November 16, any donation made to my project will be doubled by Anonymous Donor (up to $100).  To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, enter the promo code CHEER on the payment screen.

If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along.  Donations will still be accepted after November 16.

Here's my classroom request:

Here is a video showing how iPads can be used in P.E. classes:

Let's have Sexton Mountain be a trail blazer and be one of the first Beaverton schools to use iPads effectively in P.E. classes!  If you have any questions, please let me know!
