Winter Break 60

Winter Break 60 scorecard

 Winter Break 60 scorecard

Students know to keep our bodies healthy and fit we need to be physically active at least 60 minutes a day.  Easier said than done in the summer, than the winter.  So here is a challenge.

Use the Winter Break 60 scorecard and color in each day of Winter Break that you are physically active for 60 minutes or more.  FAMILIES CAN DO IT TOGETHER.  You can print extra copies below for each member of the family.  Students can return their Winter Break 60 Scorecard - signed by a parent - for a chance to win a prize from me!  They are due January 9.

Of course, make sure you are active on most days - it doesn't need to be all.

PE Grades - Trimester 1

First trimester ends.  Students and parents are anxious to see the first Report Card of the school year. As a parent, I know the feeling.  Many of you know Report Cards went home on December 9.  I hope and your child took a look the PE grades.
Our goal in PE is to develop physically active students who enjoy keeping their bodies fit, healthy, and strong.  To do that, we focus on developing physical skills (what you can do), fitness concepts (what you know about physical fitness), and how to interact and behave when physically active and/or competing.
I am tasked to grade students on the PE learning targets we have covered this year ONLY.  It is tricky when I have taught most of our students for many years.  Hopefully, you have read the comments sections of the PE grades to find our what we have covered during the first trimester.  I understand my lengthy comments may have been cut off.  So here is the curriculum piece in its entirety for each grade.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

5th, 4th, 3rd Grade
During the 19 visits to PE in the first trimester, these were some of the skills we worked on:  hand striking, racquet striking, locomotor skills, physical fitness/exercise skills, calculating heart rate and what it means, muscles and areas of the body in relationship to exercise, exercise benefits, teamwork and being good sports with ALL classmates, praising others, independently staying on task, following expectations, and more.  Some skills were taught to proficiency and others we will continue to develop.  All students were graded on their performance during the 2014-15 first trimester only.

2nd, 1st Grade
During the 19 visits to PE in the first trimester, these were some of the skills we worked on:  locomotor skills (skip, gallop), underhand toss/roll, hand striking, ball control, eye-hand coordination, catching, rhythms (jump rope, hula hoops), spatial and body awareness, changes that happen to our body during exercise, exercise benefits, teamwork and being good sports with ALL classmates, independently staying on task, following expectations, and more.  Some skills were taught to proficiency and others we will continue to develop.  All students were graded on their performance during the 2014-15 first trimester only.

2014-15 Hoop Shoot Winners

Congratulations to this year's Sexton Mountain Hoop Shoot winners.  These four students made the most basketball free throws out of ten attempts in their age group.  Seventy-two students participated during their PE classes in late November.

10-11 year-old Boys - Tyler C.
10-11 year-old Girls - Haimanot H.
8-9 year-old Boys - Christian N.
8-9 year-old Girls - Jessica K.

Each of these winners competed against other Beaverton School District winners in the Beaverton Elks Club contest in early December.  Tyler, Haimanot, and Christian won and will compete in the Metro Contest in January in Milwaukie.

This week...Pirate Island & iPads

Enjoy some pictures of our students playing Pirate Island.  It is an adventure game involving Treasure Hunters vs Pirates in a quest to get some treasure!  To succeed, students needed to use teamwork, be good sports, and exhibit safe behavior.

Also, 3rd through 5th grade students used iPads to take a 2-minute quiz (see pic at bottom of post) about concepts and benefits relating to Heart/Heart Rate/Pulse.  Quick and easy way to assess kids in PE without sacrificing movement time...as well as trees:)

Oh, Hello!

Wow!  I apologize for dropping the ball and not updating my blog.  Surefire way to ensure no one reads your blog is to not post anything.  Without further ado...
I'm Back!

This week in PE, all students watched a short video from the Kid President, titled "20 Thing We Should Say More Often".  After watching, students were asked "What could we say in PE more often?"  I heard amazing answers from 6 year olds and 11 year olds.  We all felt good and the positive comments were flying!

We all realized it does not take much to say something that could really make a big difference to someone else.  It is really easy.  Try it!

Watch the video as a family and chat about it!

Using Teamwork to "Survive"

Wow, it is fantastic to see these students again!

It was a special first week back.

At the beginning of the school year, I always like to focus on teamwork and sportsmanship when playing in games.  For teams to be successful, they must work together.  I also like to look for players who use teamwork with ALL teammates.  2nd through 5th grade classes dove in playing a game called Survivor.

(Parents) - The goal in Survivor is to get your team from one side of the gym to the other side of the gym.  Problem is players may not touch the floor.  Each team has materials they can use to help their team get across without touching the floor.  Students are not instructed how to use the materials.  They must work together to figure it out!

I have seen people aged 5 to 65 play this game (Sexton Mountain have even played!).  Hands down, the most successful teams are the teams that worked together - they helped, listened, problem solved, encouraged, and more!

In PE, many teams made it across, but not all.  I took a photo of each team that accomplished their goal!  (Some teams even made it back and forth 4 separate times even after I took away some equipment after each successful trip.)

Enjoy!  Great job, kids!

Yes, you do see plungers.

Ready....Set....

The gym is spotless and ready for PE students to be active!

I have already seen a few students and families.  Some great stories were shared about summertime adventures.  I look forward to seeing my Sexton PE students and hearing about more activities they experienced.
I very much enjoyed time with my family.  My kids, wife, and I camped at the coast, hiked the Gorge, paddle boarded in the Puget Sound, mountain biked the Bend/Sunriver area, watched the World Cup, cycled Washington County, and read lots of books!

Sexton Mt. PE announcements!!!

  • Students in Grades 1-5 will have PE every three school days this year!!!  Going from every four days to three is a step in the right direction.  I am so pumped to see every student more often!
  • Sexton Mt. is 1 of 9 Beaverton schools whose PE program received an innovation grant last spring.  We will be receiving 7 iPads with the goal of implementing ways that mobile devices can help students achieve PE learning targets and be active.  Mobile devices are here to stay, might as well learn how to use them to keep us active, not inactive.
  • Which days are PE days?
    • A & D Days - Lucas/Simpson, Shotola, Baldwin, Cobain-Soto, Hayhurst, Tsakistos
    • B & E Days - Stratton, Hunt, Pfaff, Cohn, Martin
    • C & F Days - Bartlett, Tanksley, Olson, Antich, Weigel
